Breast Augmentation Incision Options
Northern Virginia, Maryland & Washington, DC

The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery located in Reston, Virginia, specializes in breast enhancement surgery, including breast implants, breast augmentation, breast lifts and breast reductions for Northern Virginia, Maryland & Washington, DC.

During your breast augmentation consultation with one of our experienced surgeons, you will discuss incision options. The option best suited to meet your needs will depend on your overall anatomy as well as things such as clothing preferences and breast implant placement options. We will work closely with you to help you determine what incision option will best help you meet your goals.

Periareolar Incisions

Periareolar incisions are placed around your nipple at the border of the dark skin of your areola. Because the incision is placed at the border, visible scarring is greatly reduced. Periareolar incisions give our surgeons great control over implant placement helping ensure symmetrical results, and are ideal for women who want an impressive cleavage. Periareolar incisions are also very small and may also help reduce excessive bleeding and other surgical complications. Some studies show these incisions are associated with an increased risk of nipple sensitivity that may interfere with milk production and breastfeeding.

Inframammary Incisions

Inframammary incisions are placed underneath your breasts in the fold where your breast and chest come together. This placement hides the scars in the natural folds of your breasts making it ideal for women who are concerned about visible scarring. Inframammary incisions provide our surgeons with increased control over placement, helping ensure a balanced, natural look. These incisions, like periareolar incisions, can provide for a striking cleavage.

Trans-Axillary Incisions

Trans-Axillary incisions are placed in your armpit. With this incision option the scars are hidden in the folds of your skin, but may be noticeable with sleeveless dresses or shirts. Due to the distance from incision to implant site, placement with trans-axillary incisions may not be as precise and symmetrical. In addition, this incision site may result in a wider, less pronounced cleavage. Not everyone is a candidate for this incision site, and the additional equipment and time necessary make this incision choice slightly more expensive. However, for women with insufficient breast tissue to cover an Inframammary incision, trans-axillary incisions are often a good alternative.

When you come to us for a breast augmentation consultation, one of our cosmetic surgeons will assess your frame and listen carefully to your aesthetic goals. Taking these things into account, the incision option that will most suit your needs will be determined.
