Subglandular Implant Placement
Subglandular implants are placed directly beneath your breast tissue, on top of the muscles in your chest. Subglandular implants allow for a less invasive surgery because your muscles are not impacted. In addition, this option is ideal for women who lift weights because the implant will not be affected by flexion of the chest muscles.
Subglandular implants tend to look less natural than submuscular implants and can result in a more enhanced appearance. This implant option is also more likely to ripple and result in complications such as capsular contracture and difficulties receiving mammograms. It is most often used in larger breasts in women who want a small implant to regain some lost volume after children.
Submuscular Implant Placement
Submuscular implants are placed below the muscles in your chest and require more recovery time. Submuscular implants look and feel more natural, and reduce your risk of capsular contracture. In addition, the placement of submuscular implants will minimize interference with mammograms, minimizing the need for MRIs to detect breast cancer.
Submuscular implants may look less natural on women with sagging breasts. This insertion option may also result in a bulging appearance in some women.
The implant placement option most suited to you is best determined in a consultation with one of our breast implant surgeons. During this consultation, the option most likely to provide you with good-looking breast augmentation results will be suggested.
